New parents are typically warned in the hospital not to share a bed with their baby, however incidents of accidental death by suffocation is on the rise. Hospital staff also make a point to instruct parents to have their baby sleep on their back in their crib or bassinet and to remove all covers and even crib bumpers to reduce the incidence of SIDS. Tragically, these precautionary warnings are failing to register with many parents and caregivers with often-fatal consequences.
Wisconsin had two such incidents in the past two weeks. A 10-month old Wausau boy died while sleeping with his mother on a futon last week, and just the week before a 3 month-old died in Milwaukee while sleeping with his grandmother. Wisconsin attributes six out the seven SIDS deaths in 2007 to accidental asphyxiation. These preventable, tragic deaths irreparably affect the lives of parents, friends and family members.
Baby Bed Bumpers
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services issued a public alert last year after 169 children had died while co sleeping with their parents. The alert failed to make an impact as 81 more died co sleeping between November and March.
In March 2009 in Valencia, California, a 2-month-old boy died while sleeping with his parents. In Peoria, Ill., a week earlier, a baby girl died while sleeping with her mother. The list goes on and on across the United States.
New parents should heed this warning. You can protect your baby by not co-sleeping or allowing a caregiver of your baby to co-sleep with your infant. It can have fatal consequences and you should not do it, even once. For the best protection against suffocation and even SIDS, I also strongly recommend using an infant movement monitor in the bassinet or crib as an extra level of protection. Remember as a new parent you are frequently sleep deprived as you care for your newborn, and to expect to be able to monitor and protect your infant or toddler while you are asleep is unrealistic and dangerous.
